The Planes – The Planes

The Planes formed in Brooklyn NY in the summer of 2010, releasing their first album in July this year – self-titled ‘The Planes’.

Their website proudly proclaims that the album was “recorded on 1/4” tape in a busy practice building, and mixed, mastered, and duplicated exclusively by the band”. One finds this fact very easy to accept.

Eastern Phoebes – Wampum

Eastern Phoebes’ bizarrely named Wampumalbum is introduced with ‘John Boyle Island (Wampum),’ where a gentle and balmy laziness to the vocal delivery compliments the layers of percussion and keys perfectly along side some cute harmonies. A promising song from a band who intriguingly decided to use toy instruments on many of their songs, as well as the more traditional but rather obscure melodica and Autoharp.

Prospecto Musical Showcase – Day 1

The second year of the Prospecto Musical Showcase in Downtown Grand Rapids had a few really great moments that I will attempt to chronicle. The showcase included four stages in three venues at the Intersection,Pyramid Scheme and Founders Brewery.
